Sierra Norte Private Hiking

Cloud forest, Zapotec villages, and total silence — one hour from the city.

Duration 9–10 h
Price From $90 USD / person
Departs 7:00 AM
Minimum 2 people

One hour north of Oaxaca City, the landscape changes completely. The dry valley floor gives way to pine-oak forest, then cloud forest — a completely different ecosystem at 3,000 meters above sea level. The Pueblos Mancomunados are eight indigenous Zapotec communities that have been managing their own ecotourism since the 1990s. This is real community-based tourism: your guide is from the village, the food is from the village, and the money stays in the village.

1
Pickup at your hotel
We head north on Highway 175 through the mountains.
2
Arrive at Pueblos Mancomunados
Benito Juárez, Cuajimoloyas, or Lachatao — we choose based on season and conditions. Meet your local community guide.
3
Guided trail — 3 to 5 hours
Pine-oak forest transitions to cloud forest. Viewpoints across the Sierra Juárez. Endemic birds: you might spot a resplendent quetzal, a mountain toucan, or dozens of species found only here.
4
Village visit
A colonial-era church. Handwoven wool textiles made on traditional looms. A pace of life that hasn't changed much.
5
Lunch at the community cabin
Wild mushroom broth harvested from the surrounding forest. Local quesillo. Blue corn tortillas made that morning.
6
Return to Oaxaca City
We drive back through the mountains with views of the entire Valley below. Back by 5:30–6:00 PM.
